I wrote one fic for Yuletide this year - I think it's the first time I haven't been able to come up with a treat. I had ideas for other things, but they never really came together.

Summary:

A case, a distinguished gentleman, an experiment, a misunderstanding, and some avoidance. A few bumps in the road are to be expected, especially when the journey is a surprise.

It was...okay? And the not-okay parts were absolutely my own fault. There are parts of it that I really like! And definitely parts of it that I wish I'd had time more time to unpack, at which point I wondered if I could just put the whole case offscreen but for the one interview. Also, picking a murder victim is hard, yo. I was pretty sure that I wanted a bit of senselessness to it, rather than a crime of deeply involved passion or conspiracy, because I knew I didn't have it in me to write that sort of case the way I would have wanted to in the time frame. *hands*

Basically, it definitely wasn't the vaguely fluffy, tropey thing that I had thought I might write, but my recipient got a really nice family-thinks-they're-dating fic early in November. There's already been a lot of really excellent mining of the events that I thought I could have written. I feel like this always happens when I offer fandoms on the larger size of Yuletide eligibility, and I need to find a way to either get over the feeling or the fact of it.

Er, and actually, back on a positive note. I don't know that I've ever created a character in fanfic for more than the tiniest of passing references. So the fact that several people seemed to like Harry was a source of great relief.

I also totally came out of canon review with a new random ship - Hathaway and Phillip "working class lout from the north of England" Beaumont from The Quality of Mercy (the one with the murder in the student company producing The Merchant of Venice). Because he gets all the best lines, like "The name might not mean much to you now, but give it time: it'll mean even less," and to whom Hathaway asked, "I know it sounds like a silly question, but do you actually like anybody in Oxford?"

Also, my cat has the hiccups.
