I will say that there is a lot of gen/canon adventure movie/book stuff which I'm sure is fine. I haven't really been reading so much as skimming summaries in case anything catches my interest, so of course it's the horrible summaries that are stuck in my memory. And it's really not fair to look at either fanfiction.net and 4chan and expect the standards for one fandom of works to be any different from everything else there.
The thing that I'm having a hard time with is that there's a decent amount of Hiccup/Toothless (on ff.net, at least, is either Human!Toothless or Dragon!Hiccup, but its not always clear from the summaries, and even then, DNW.) There's also a lot of "a mysterious girl/girl dragon shows up on the island" but I think that's to be expected. It seems to be a crap shoot whether Astrid is secretly evil/a bitch in those stories.
