This would be an American Idiot primer if I put more effort into it
The plot of American Idiot (Wikipedia)
Have some character background (including plot details for the musical): Tunny left home, joined the army, had his left leg amputated above the knee as a result of a combat injury. Will stayed home with his pregnant girlfriend, drank a lot, smoked a lot of pot, and presumably continued to do so after she took the kid and left him for a hotshot rock star.
Tunny came home with his nurse/girlfriend. Will was...still there.
All that actually happened in the musical. Here starts the part that only happened in my head:
Tunny and his girlfriend parted ways for reasons I'm not going to bother going into; Will liked her, even though they had nothing in common, but he never thought that she and Tunny were going to last.
They both have jobs of a sort. Tunny owns a small 1960's-ish house which may or may not be the house he grew up in. Will rents the same small, crappy apartment that he's had for years, and he spends as little time as possible there in his effort to not be a hermit. They spend a lot of time drinking beer in Tunny's back yard. At this point in time, Tunny's been home for maybe a year.
We join our heroes the morning after they hook up, while Tunny's trying to figure out what's next.
