A possibly more productive obsession?
Dec. 23rd, 2008 10:25 pmI tend to fixate on something and pretty much do that until it burns out. In the past, that has included gaming, watching entire TV series over the course of a day or two, and tearing through hundreds of thousands of words of fic in a new-to-me fandom. Back when I was a kid, I used to read books like that, to the exclusion of all else. I should read more, but I can't help but think that books - particularly books that I am not going to read more than once - are a huge waste of resources, except for the part where they're still vitally necessary to employing writers. I think I ought to buy one of those electronic reader things. I've bought a few e-books from internet publishers, and obviously I read, a ton, on the computer, but I'm not sure whether I'd actually use the e-book thinger, or whether it'd be another (waste of resources) gadget.
Anyway, back to my original point. In the past month, I've posted over 16,000 words of Live Free or Die Hard John/Matt fic. Prior to that, I'd written just over 10,000 words of fic, total. Ever. I'm pretty happy with it, and I think I've accomplished what I meant to write, but I need something more challenging to work on.
New Year's Writing Resolution: Work on telling more through dialogue, or at least explicit interior monologue, particularly when writing talky characters. I feel like I'm being lazy with my narration, but then I look at what I'm narrating, and I can't figure out what I could have the characters say that would be a better illustration.
