I know better. I do. I just want to read stories, and occasionally write them. Entertainment, and this is not entertaining.

Bitching about it, or reading other people bitch about it, never makes me feel better. All it does is make my already-dodgy writing crawl into a hole and die. Of course, maybe that's just as well.

I have to wonder if all open-canon fandoms are like this. It's been years since I followed a community that wasn't fic-only. You know that disclaimer that we're all supposed to put on our fic, that these are not our characters? I'm hugely uncomfortable with anyone saying, "You can neglect or twist these elements of canon to tell your story, but not those." Maybe the fact that comic canon is sort of wobbly to begin with makes people hold on even more fiercely to their One True Characterization.

I was just poking around and stumbled by, but this post drives me to comment, and I hope you don't mind.

Comics fen can be completely insane. I say this as one of them. And yes, crazy about however they perceive the TRUE canon/characterisation to be. Which, to make things more complicated, varies from person to person. You're hanging out in Avengers fandom, right? I do love the Avengers, but the fandom makes me go, OMG, CHILL OUT on a regular basis.

Hi! I don't mind at all! And yeah, it was cap_ironman that was bringing the crazy this time, but I'm wondering if I just wasn't deep enough into other comic fandoms to see it.

See, I know (knew?) this. I mean, the comic-book fan is a total arguing-geek cliche, so I'm not sure why I was shocked and confused by the level of YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG that showed up. I guess it's my fault for expecting people to save their wrath for the product they pay for. Or don't pay for, probably. So maybe I should have recognized that as a false assumption...
