When I travel, I buy The New Yorker at the airport. There was an interesting article (abstract) about people who have donated kidneys to strangers, and the (for the most part WTF) response they got when talking about it.
I swear there was an episode of... Law and Order, maybe?... that was about someone who possibly had a compulsion for giving things away which eventually extended to tissue donations. I have no idea what I'd use for search terms to try to narrow that down.
Personally? I don't think I'd donate a kidney to a stranger, because there is altruistic, and then there is the potential for sacrifice for yourself, friends and family, but bone marrow, sure, I think that's an acceptable (minimal) level of risk for a potentially huge benefit to another person.
Which reminds me, I have no idea if I'm still listed in a bone marrow donor registry. I would assume that's one of those things you need to update periodically if you move or whatever so they can still find you.
