The endless reruns of NCIS are on season four this week, AKA the one where Tony is constantly deceiving everyone on the team, and it's reminding me of how that was basically my bulletproof narrative kink in that fandom, with its cousin, hiding an illness or injury.

Which now strikes me as odd, because it's fairly close to everything I started to hate about White Collar. And it's not like Matt Bomer isn't capable of selling me on his being conflicted and feeling guilty, and feeling like he needs to look out for himself because no one else will.

Suits is back June 11, and I still haven't watched the back half of the last season. The battle of Gina vs. OH MY GOD, I CAN NO LONGER SUSPEND MY DISBELIEF continues.

I wish I could write shorter things. I would write more of them! I love longfic, and occasionally have fic ideas that can only be served by longfic, but I really love scenes - slice of life, five things, all that stuff, and some of what I'm happiest with of what I've written are things that feel unresolved. Hopeful, almost always, but open-ended.

I bought two shirts I really like, but this entry is not about them

I'd just like to state for the record how very much I love NCIS this season, and Justified forever and always. Justified was three or four episodes into the second season before I found time to start watching, and then by that point, I knew I was going to want to watch all of them once I started, but didn't have three-plus hours free, from which point it just got worse every week until three weeks ago when I watched the whole season to that point, and then the last two weeks, and OH MY GOD, YOU GUYS.

On the other hand, NCIS this season looked like something I was going to have to trudge through for the vague hope of fannish inspiration, and then suddenly it was SO GOOD.

(However, I am still not a fan of McGee and/or Sean Murray's acting, even though I'd really like to be. Am I forgetting some point where he did something other than take up space and hack things? Because I would really like to like him. Also, how is it that he had a recurring role of some sort on JAG that is totally not who is is in NCIS? Aren't they in the same universe? I suppose there are a fair number of tallish brown-haired white guys running around the Navy...)

Let's see. Also went to see Fast Five after work on Friday and, I don't know. I wasn't super-excited going in

(also, what did we do before google and wikipedia, seriously? before cell phones, I totally remember how that went, but before the internet did we just... not know stuff? were there just so many fewer things to know that this knowledge could reasonably be parceled out among one's friends, and the books belonging to those friends? this thought brought to you by the fact that even after rewinding five times, I still could not place the voice singing at the end of Justified until I googled the lyrics. for that matter, what would I have done if I'd only been able to watch it live?)

Is there any way this isn't going to be horrible? Also, Tony Awards!

NCIS: Los Angeles, starring LL Cool J and Chris O'Donnell. Seriously? It's a bit late for April Fools. http://www.cbs.com/primetime/ncis_los_angeles/

Apparently, it's about surveillance and undercover work, rather than traditional investigation of a crime, and I just don't see how it's going to work. They claim it's still about the characters and the team, but... yeah. It's dubious.

Also, Tony awards! The opening number, and, actually, most of the show, was sort of a train wreck of production values. I understand that most of the performers are, you know, busy, and that they lifted their performances from their own stage and dropped them down at Radio City, but I'd think that the lack of rehearsal time would have meant that the Tony Award staff would have tried extra hard to do things like turn the microphones on.

The performances were all great, Neil Patrick Harris was charming, Anne Hathaway (... as an audience member... shut up!) was amazingly cute and just-happy-to-be-there as always, and the cast of Hair terrified at least a few of the audience members, I'm sure.

NCIS Challenge voting

Voting for Session "Two" Round 1 of NCIS Last Fiction Writer Standing is open. There's 11 stories, 750 words maximum, and it would be swell if people would go read them and vote. The first session of NCIS_LFWS got cut off at the knees when the mod got swamped with Real Life (boo) so they started over, and I have this horrible feeling that this session is just going to limp along.

Anyway, master post for Round 1 is here, voting is by comment to the masterlist, instructions are on the post. And voting closes Saturday, which seems awfully soon, even if it's only 7000 words.

Oh, and story submissions were via e-mail, and the mod appears to have used the RTE for the entries that came attached as files, so... view in your own style, maybe...

ETA: except maybe not right this moment because someone just kicked a cable loose over on LJ, and there's database errors like whoa.

Hello, retcon!

I was thinking I'd rewatch season 1 of NCIS to try to come up with a missing scene I wanted to write for a challenge. It turns out that what I should have decided was to watch season 1 for the first time, because I've never seen at least the first 10 episodes. I'm particularly enjoying Tony's casual Gibbs-like clothes, and the fact that early in the season, Gibbs, Kate, and someone else (Paula Cassidy? I already forget who) make references to Shane and The Maltese Falcon that totally go over Tony's head. Also, the fact that Fornell doesn't know who Gibbs is in the first episode. Oh, show.

Given the massive number of canon-reference favorites that I understand now (Tony being jealous of Stan Burley, Gibbs making Kate and Tony use their belongings for target practice, "the second B is for bastard," among others) I really should have realized how many episodes I missed. Oh, and Gibbs totally says he's been married three times. I assumed he said he had three ex-wives, in some sort of clever writer-type dodge, but nope!

Now I'm tempted to go watch all sorts of first-season episodes and see what else they massively rewrote.

Also, I totally didn't realize that there were 11 seasons of M*A*S*H I felt like I'd seen every episode in syndication at some point - it would have taken less than a year of watching the two episodes that were on every night if they'd shown them in order - but now I wonder if I have.

ETA: Ha! Episode 11, Tony is sitting on consultant!McGee's deck in his postage-stamp office. Is sitting cross-legged on his desk. Curled up in the corner by the filing cabinet. Oh, Tony. Please go buy some dignity. I have no idea how he pulled off bossing the Probie around once he joined the team.
