The Sorcerer's Apprentice, while it's obviously not a perfect movie, had basically everything I wanted to get out of it. The reputedly bad, extensively reworked script was really not any worse than what you'd find in your average action movie. I liked the plot, and as far as I could tell, the worst of it was a few brief instances of exceedingly clunky exposition. It's not clever. It's not Tina Fey and it's not Pixar. But it's funny, and exciting, and sort of creative and really entertaining.
I liked all of the characters. I loved that the apprentice is also a scientist. I liked the setup in Dave's childhood, although it ends with something of a needless embarrassment squick moment, but it serves to set up his life as well as the movie's central plot. I liked the one running gag that didn't get beaten to death.
Other things I liked: I really like the fact that Becky, the relatively formless, aimless, yoga-practicing, cute, blonde love interest actually has a role in the climax of the movie that is not being bait for the hero's downfall. Also, it neatly tied up a scene that seemed pointless and a little dismissive of her, earlier in the movie.
I love, love, love his giant Tesla coil project. It reminds me of the Tesla Coil Mario Bros. theme which still makes me smile no matter how many times I watch it. Although, now that I'm thinking of it, I don't think that Tesla coil scene in the commercial is actually in the movie.
And, yeah. Science! Hooray, Science!
To repeat what I posted to Facebook while waiting to see if there was a scene at the end of the credits: If you enjoy Disney-style action and special effects, old, crazy Nic Cage or Jay Baruchel, you should go see The Sorcerer's Apprentice. It'll do you good.
That said,
- The classic mop scene was clearly shoehorned into the plot on a really flimsy grounds, and was exited from almost as gracelessly. Also? I would have been happier if they'd set it somewhere else, somehow, because hello risk of death by electrocution. On the bright side, they used the classic theme for the soundtrack. And it was cute. And Jay Baruchel was in it, so.
- Clearly it isn't a party unless some guy gets hit in the nuts. They kept it to a minimum, though.
- I don't remember the actual dialogue, but I could have done without the slightly ham-handed, [good guy makes cryptic-but-not-really comment before running off] "Oh no! Surely you are not planning on being slightly crazy and/or utterly self-sacrificing!" moments. They were just a blip on the screen of a script that I thought was pretty charming for a summer Disney live-action movie.
- Yes, magic, I get it, but it really bugged me that Balthazar's car went from right- to left-hand drive
- I didn't notice much product placement, but there was a random Dyson vacuum cleaner on the floor in the middle of the lab in at least once scene. The lab which is clearly ShopVac territory if there ever was one.
