NCIS, why must you do this to me?

I started catching up on all the NCIS that I've missed, and I'm confused and more than a little annoyed with the writers, but I know that some of it is just that my memory is like swiss cheese.
So, I watched the first episode of this season when it aired, already having forgotten whether we knew who Tony was tasked with investigating, or whatever, by SecNav at the end of season 8. I have since forgotten whether ...AJ? Whatever her name is... and Tony were still togetherish at that point. Or how the episode was resolved. Maybe she's dead now, whatever. As much as her characterization last season irritated me, I was really hoping that she'd stick around long enough to prove competent, and that there would actually be another team that could show up occasionally, like we see Fornell, or Abby's consultant buddies.
And then I took a two month break before coming back, to the episode where Tony has entirely rewritten an event in his past so that he's the perpetrator instead of the victim. And then I (or maybe we, but like I said, I can't keep track) learn that Tim is So Very Estranged from his father, and that both he and his grandfather were Admirals. Great. And Abby learns that she's adopted, and Ziva is So Alone, and the team are like Gibbs's kids, and that Gibbs was the One True Love for his second wife. So, the theme this season is family? I can work with that, but I don't remember past seasons being quite this clumsy
I want CIRay to come back. I thoroughly expected either the Lt. Commander or the lobbyist to be set up as Ziva's latest star-crossed love interest. As far as I can tell, in the first seven episodes, the only thing that really carried through from one episode to a later one so far was Ducky's date with Penelope According to IMDB, there are 8 writers credited with the first 7 episodes, and I'm going to guess that's typical for NCIS, but now I'm really curious who's steering the ship.
Also, surprise! Abby's parents are dead. And apparently all of her grandparents as well, since the only person left to ask questions of is her ancient aunt. This makes me grumpy. Did they seriously just not think about this until season 9?
On a wholly unrelated note, I was just going through my AO3 fic, cleaning up tags, and found something that I'd uploaded twice, so I deleted one of the copies. And then I got an e-mail from AO3 letting me know that I'd deleted it, with a copy of the story attached. That's sort of neat.
