Stiles is clutching his phone so tightly that he can hear the case creak, and the screen feels too warm against his skin. "No, but, seriously, you don't-"
"No."
"LISTEN," Stiles yells, and, Jesus, it's a good thing they're having this conversation over the phone, so that he can get the reflexive cringe over with in the safety of his own home, where Derek can't smell his fear. Except that the smell of his fear has probably permanently seeped into the walls along with the presumably more normal boy-smells that used to take up the space.
It probably says something that as much time as he spends being fucking terrified, he hasn't had a panic attack yet in the Werewolf Era. Small miracles.
He can hear something rattle like a door being slammed, which is not a good sign for Derek's mood but at least it means Stiles doesn't have to pull the phone away from his ear to make sure he hasn't been hung up on. "Please," Stiles says, at a more reasonable volume. "I know that everything always seems like it's fucking life-or-death with you people, but this is actual, permanent death I'm talking about." He draws a shaky breath and starts over again. "He's all I've got. Please, I know- I know you understand that. I've got to find him. You have to help me find him."
There's a pause, and every time there's silence, Stiles's brain starts filling it up with everything that could have gone wrong in the twenty-four hours since anyone had seen his father, in the sixteen since his patrol car had been found. "It's not your fault," Scott had said that morning, and that was the opposite of reassuring; Stiles had been so convinced that he'd made his father a target that he hadn't even started to consider all the ways that normal human cops in normal human towns die.
