Computery things, and general oddness.
Sep. 7th, 2009 12:43 pmA couple days ago, one of my external hard drives tried to die. One day I went to access it, and couldn't, and WinXP told me that the drive hadn't been formated, and did I want to format it now? And...no.

TestDisk fixed it. I had to do the "Deeper Search" to locate the partition, and it took about a year and a half to run, but everything's back and shiny. Great documentation, worked as described, even though I have only the vaguest understanding of most of the terminology. So, yay.
In other news, my father has spent the past 4 or so hours vacuuming the house.
This would be odd by itself, because my father doesn't vacuum. My mother doesn't either; they have a cleaning lady who comes twice a week.
But my father? Just spent 4 hours vacuuming the outside of the house, removing a couple hundred of the literally (possibly tens of-) thousands of annoying bugs that have been swarming around the house for the past month or two. I've decided to classify them as mosquitoes, because they start swarming around sunset, but I don't think they bite. Their main purpose in life seems to be sitting on the white-painted trim of my parents house, like lovebugs, but more persistent, and will less of the amusing attachment to each other.
(at this point, I stopped writing and went downstairs to dig out the Audubon Guide to North American Insects to try to figure out wth they are. I've wondered for about a month now without bothering to look, but clearly if I'm going to blog about it, they need a proper name. So, I'm going to go with the Midboreal Mayfly It's close enough, anyway. They're effing annoying.)
There are already (or still) 20 or 30 flies back on the porch where he started this morning, and I'm sure it'll get worse when they come out to swarm tonight, but if it makes him feel better to try, then good for him.
