So it looks like Adam Baldwin is stirring the pot at best, probably passing through ignorant, and deeply opposed to same sex marriage at worst... which, ugh, and then sort of my next thought after that was that one of my most-used icons is that one of Jayne. I am torn as to whether I now need to use it for any post with a queer theme, or drop it entirely. /fannishproblems. Feel free to chime in.

I haven't checked, like, anything social mediaish in about ten days, but I'm working on it now! I hope you've been well!

Sigh, I long ago resolved it was better to not know about famous peoples real life -- with small exceptions for egregious issues such as woody Allen etc-- Baldwin never his his conservative cred so his opinions aren't much of a surprise. In my mind, Jayne is a wholly different being from him, as are most of the characters he's played because he is talented and had good material. To that end, so long as he doesn't actively engage in physical assault, I refuse to let his opinions color past times that are enjoyable to me.

If he gets as rich as orson Scott card and as actively involved in putting his money behind his politics, I'll probably reevaluate. But at least with icons he's not getting any money from us usng them

I'm with you, but it just caught me off guard because I know so vanishingly little about the actors behind most characters - and it's just easier in my head to leave them all hanging out behind a liberal Hollywood stereotype until evidence to the contrary falls in my lap.

it's absolutely just a picture of a character in a stupid hat, but I suppose I could have said the same about Mel Gibson once upon a time. In a wider venue, I think it would be silly to attach too much significance between that and an actor's perfectly valid right to express an opinion, or ask a question, or whatever he says he was doing, but it did make me curious about how something *like* that would play in fannish circles.

Interesting question. Scrolling through my icons, I have several with characters played by Sean Bean, Michael Fassbender and David Soul, all of whom have been accused of domestic violence. Also Rampage Jackson, who's been pretty homophobic in interviews, and those driving charges.

I've thought about deleting them, especially the Magneto one, but in the end the characters mean enough to me independent of the actors portraying them that I choose not to do it.

However, there's a couple celebrities who have made such a point of their beliefs (Gibson, Heston, Cruise), or are such terrible people (Allen), that I wouldn't have an icon with any of their characters, regardless of how much I liked the media. I think Adam Baldwin has hit the latter category for me, but my investment in Jayne is low too (only Firefly icon I have is one of Zoe), so it's not a difficult choice.

Yeah, I don't generally know enough about any celebrity's personal views until they hit Charlie Sheen or Mel Gibson levels of public controversy - and aided by the fact that so many fandom darlings are B-list celebs at their most famous, I've just never given it any thought before.

I think most of my noodling about it is closest to a trigger warning debate than anything else, like, do I have an icon with someone's face on it that is going to be a rage-inducing reminder for someone on my flist. In this case, I think he's just being a dolt, so I'm not terribly fussed about it. His twitter feed is awful, though. Like, not even content wise, it just made my head hurt to try and parse some of his tweets.

I think anyone in the fandom knows well his almost tea party conservative views. He used to actively troll political threads on firefly message boards back during the show and immediately after it.


At this point I look at him like the embarrassing uncle of a family that I'm friends with everyone else in it.
