What was my first fandom? For [personal profile] theladyscribe

I really, really wish I could remember how I discovered fandom, and fic. What was I even looking for? It had certainly never occurred to me that people could rework the characters and settings of published media into something else. Heck, I don't think I even played make-believe with actual characters when I was a kid.

In 2006, I was in graduate school, living in a town where the only people I knew were my grad school friends and the out-of-town boyfriend who had moved in sort of without my asking him to, and I was watching a lot of TV. We were watching a lot of TV, including most of Stargate SG-1 in reruns. We had discovered Netflix, and my dad had given ma a TiVo for Christmas.

There was, after basically ten years of not watching TV with any amount of attention, loyalty, or frequency, really, really a lot of TV watching going on.

Somewhere in there, season one of Veronica Mars on DVD showed up in my apartment, and then I might have watched season two as it aired, because lord knows I wouldn't have had the first clue how to find anything online if it was floating around it there, but I was caught up when season 3 premiered. And somewhere in there, great mystery of mysteries now lost to the sands of time, I discovered the Veronica Mars fic communities on LJ.

I was still spending a lot - A LOT - of time gaming, and trying to live the rest of my actual life, I read pretty widely and indiscriminately in Veronica Mars, and wrote a few short, terrible things of my own, but itwasn't until I discovered Jim and Pam on the early seasons of The Office (via a post Casino-Night fan edit) that I really disappeared down the rabbit hole.

Oohh! I find people's fannish histories super-interesting, so thank you for sharing!

VMars is something I did not get into until after it ended; I knew of it from LJ, but I also thought that Jensen Ackles was Logan (because of a Dean Winchester/Veronica Mars edit I'd seen on LJ). Such a great thing to be your fannish in, though! :D

I miss the comms system! It was so great! That will be my next plot to generate more things on DW, after I convince people to start making icons again, hahaha. (Seriously, I need new icons! Most of what I have are things I've miraculously saved since like 2009!)

Veronica Mars was the first TV show I ever watched properly and purposefully - I definitely downloaded all of it, and I remember downloading most of the first season of Lost as it was airing but I wasn't in fandom back then, not knowingly, so I always think of Veronica Mars as the thing that got me into American TV fandoms. I picked up so many shows from there! I don't think I read all that much fic but I do distinctly remember being sick from school one day and turning the computer monitor around (it was bulky and difficult) and dragging the furniture around so I could watch it on the desktop PC in my living room from my armchair. I also remember making icons and things for it. :D

It was also one of the first fandoms I fell in love with a random recurring female character that no one else cared about, sigh. (Hannah! And I shipped Logan/Veronica, I just. Loved Hannah. She was a high point of S2 for me.)

Oh god, Piz was awful. I never finished S3 and knowing Veronica ended up with him didn't help any.
