Jul. 15th, 2009 08:27 pmWas it last season that they did Five Guys Named Moe and... whatever that Mia Michaels thing was with the angels or whatever? The seasons are starting to run together. I wasn't expecting group routines tonight.
I think Kayla totally rocked the Bollywood. She had the most energy and precision. Jeanine looked a little lost at times, and Janette had some really cheerleadish moments. And Melissa looked like a ballerina. Like she usually does. And Randi was there? I didn't notice anything about Randi.
And then the African dance. Oh, Evan :( Honey. His style is just too twee, and too deeply ingrained, to pull that off, although I totally think he kept up. Everyone had moments that were great, but I wasn't as wowed as I thought I was going to be. Maybe there was so much detail to the choreography that they weren't able to throw themselves into it, because I really wasn't feeling the swagger for most of it.
Favorite quote of the night: "Darling, you handled your big woman" - Debbie Allen, I love you. I think Evan and Kayla did really well, and I'll give most of the credit for that to them getting ballroom, and Kayla being glidey and swirly. Has Kayla done hip-hop yet? I'm trying to picture that.
Speaking of hip-hop. Janette's a little dance-team in her hip-hop too, to go with her cheerleader moments in the Bollywood. Ade's still great. It was a good routine for them though, and I think they danced it well. I really want more Dave Scott or Shane Sparks though. Or someone new. I'm about full up on Tabitha and Napoleon.
I was going to say that Randi and Kupono's Paso wasn't horrible, but then I remembered sitting there and wondering when it was going to be over, so, never mind.
Melissa and Brandon's Aquarius was a little... precise? Like, it was beautiful, but it wasn't free? Melissa has the hair for it at least. I'm just not excited by Melissa in anything, I don't think.
Saving the best for last -
Aw! Travis! Welcome back! Beautiful routine (Way to go for the stage kiss, but I won't hold that against you.) Also? Dear SYTYCD fandom, the clock is ticking on you writing long-time-friends hooking up fic for Travis. Perhaps where something has gone horribly wrong, and this is his love letter to the one that got away. I'm just saying... I don't think I've even read any SYTYCD fic, but that's just begging for it. Also also! I love that song. They never use random album cuts that I've actually heard before, so I'm feeling very in-the-loop right now. It won't last.
I wasn't wowed by any of the solos. Ade and Brandon's solos were powerful as expected. I'll be curious to see if Ade keeps throwing that layout in every week. Ade's solo was oddly incongruent with his music. And reminded me of a scene in Step Up 2 - which is not good. Kupono didn't make great use of the stage like Brandon and Ade did with the leapyness, but it was interesting. And clearly Evan just needs to make a career out of being charming. I really hope that Ryan makes it to the top 20 next season, because I'll be curious to see what he can do with a few months to react to Evan's experience on the show. I have no idea what Jason was going for, but it was fine. Not memorable, but solos usually aren't, for me.
Every time Jeanine does a solo, she loses her center in a turn and wobbles out of it. I wish she'd stop :( Randi, struggled a little as well - has she done a solo since Vegas? Melissa was meh. Beautiful, but not very interesting. Janette, hot but not very interesting. Kayla definitely had the best of the group, with Jeanine on her heels probably. I don't think of Kayla as being all that tall, or didn't, until she got paired with Evan, but wow, she's got legs for days.
At least most of them have stopped doing that bouncing thing to the "so you think you can dance...dance...dance" at the end.
I think Randi (maybe Melissa) and Evan-or-Kupono are going home tomorrow. I don't have any idea how the popularity contests are going this season. Jason probably had the best night, but I don't think any of the guys going home tomorrow would totally shock me now that it's just up to the voters.
