This is an open invitation for anyone to offer any sort of criticism they'd like on anything I've written.
I promise you that it will be graciously received. Anonymous comments are enabled, and comments to this post are screened, in case you're not comfortable criticizing in public. You're also welcome to send me a message.

You know, there are many lovely things about fanfic, and fanfic communities on lj. I believe that being supportive, and encouraging, and polite are all commendable things, and I am deeply appreciative of everyone who's taken a few minutes, or longer, to leave a comment on something I've written. I wouldn't want to take away from any of that, because the positive feedback is really important to me (and everyone else, presumably) but sometimes...usually... I wish people also felt free to take the time to point out things that just flat did not work for them. No matter how helpful a beta reader is, its still just one opinion, and even if I disagree with something a that a reader brings up, the effort to understand why it didn't work for someone else is valuable.

I think [profile] concrit_my_fic is a fabulous idea and I hope its traffic picks up once end of year fic craziness dies down, because while good writing should be good writing, there are also some peculiarities of writing for fandom audiences that I'd really love to see more discussion of, and I just don't have the fortitude to wade through individual fandoms' discussions.

Live Free or Die Hard, John McClane/Matt Farrell

series written for [community profile] smallfandomfest
  • Date: Nov 27 2008
    Title: it ain’t me
    Rating/Category: PG-13/Slash
    Summary: John goes undercover
Notes: 1800 words. Set a vague couple of months after the movie.

  • Date: Nov 30 2008
Title: John McClane Can Slam a Revolving Door.
    Rating/Category: R/Slash
Summary: The first rule of the internet should be “Don’t feed the trolls” but it takes Matt a little time and a little help to remember that.
Notes/Warnings: 3400 words. Set shortly after the movie.

  • Date: December 2, 2008
    Title: Shifting out of Neutral
    Rating/Category: R (language and sexual content)/Slash
Summary: (I have nothing clever to say here.) The next few days in John and Matt's life.
Notes: 3400 words. Set immediately after John McClane can Slam a Revolving Door

  • Date: December 19, 2008
    Title: Boys in Blue
    Rating/Category: R (language)/Slash
Summary: Wherein John and Matt have a failure to communicate. (again…)
    Notes: 3200 words.

  • Date: December 21, 2008
Title: I’ll be home for Christmas
    Rating/Category: R/Slash
Summary: “I told you we were meeting my dad and his partner for dinner.”
“Yeah, but he’s a cop. I thought you meant partner, not, you know, partner.”

Notes: 4600 words. Mainly a seasonally-appropriate excuse for fluff, because John McClane deserves a happy Christmas.

Standalone

Date: December 27, 2008
Title: A Better Winter Holiday
Rating: R (for language and sexual content, because I will argue that it is tasteful and appropriate!)
Summary: John employs a grand holiday tradition for the wrong reasons, but gets the right results. (You say “clichéd premise,” I say “cherished cultural icon!”)
Notes: 5200 words.

Date: January 28, 2009
Title: give and take
Rating: NC-17, but it's pretty vanilla
Summary: The best - the absolute best - thing about morning sex is a John McClane that no one else gets to see.
Notes ~500 words, written for Porn Battle VII

Date: January 30, 2009
Title: untitled porn snippet
Rating: NC-17
Summary: John always gives Matt what he needs
Notes: Written for Porn Battle VII. 1800 words. Over twice the comment character limit. I consider this an excerpt from a story that I haven't actually written yet, and at the rate I'm going, will probably never write. The "party" from the prompt? Is totally off-screen, and is Matt's 10-year high school reunion. John/Matt, established relationship.

expanded in:
Date: January 31, 2009
Title: something to believe in
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Matt goes home for his 10-year high school reunion. John goes with him.
Notes/Warnings: 6300 words, established relationship, standalone. Featuring 1800 words posted yesterday as part of the porn battle before I buckled down and decided to finished my last claimed [community profile] smallfandomfest prompt. Bears no resemblance to the Poison song of the same title, but I am quite fond of the Aqualung one. Fair warning, I nearly titled this tl;dr.
