healingmirth: typewriter keys (typewriter)
In the past week, I have accomplished at least 85% of the things I was supposed to, and for the first time in a year and a half actually finished a thing that I started writing. (This thing I started and finished in an afternoon. The last thing, I started and finished in the middle of the night. I think the moral of this story is if I have the urge to write, I need to actually do it, right then.)

Red and blue lights flashed through the windows and off the ceiling, and Mickey closed his eyes, drew in a slow breath through his nose and let it out. When he opened his eyes again, the lights were still there.

(I have spent 3? maybe 4? weeks total in Chicago in my whole life, and the most enduring memory I have from any of that time is that the cop cars look like taxis and the taxis look like cop cars. AND YET I managed to screw up the color of cop cars' lights for this and not notice until many hours later, by which point I just decided to roll with it. I have made AUs of stupider things. Shameless has 100% messed up stupider things.)

Oh, belatedly. I did post the thing. Work #75 of mine on AO3!

Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Smokin' Aces (2006)
Rating: Not Rated

Characters: Hollis Elmore, Richard Messner
Series: Part 2 of will you allow me that?
Summary:

Elmore - Hollis - hadn't moved from the passenger seat, and he was passed out or asleep with his forehead pressed against the window, his breath making a small foggy patch on the glass.

It's a scene or three that slots in between the road trip in part 1 of that series (written for yuletide a few years ago) and part 3 (which was, I think, a [community profile] 15_minute_ficlets snippet).

I'm a tiny bit sad to let these dudes go, but now that Ceares got the story they were hoping for, I wasn't ever going to commit to a story with an audience of like 3. (I took a screenshot a couple days after I posted it, when it had one hit, one kudo, one comment, one bookmark. Nice.)
healingmirth: Coca-Cola bear with Yuletide text (yuletide)
Yuletide fic! I wrote three things!

I'd written three stories once before, when I wrote two stories for my recipient and then a treat for Elyn in one of those fandoms, but that was waaaaay back in 2009.

Breakfast Club, Breakfast Club, Vikings )

I threw a lot of words at a lot of things that I didn't post this year - a story or two for SS*BB; the aforementioned abandoned Yuletide fic attempts; an American Idiot fork-in-the-road AU that I don't think there's anyone left in the fandom to read; a few Arthur/Eames story ideas. I'm not sure that it was more unpublished words than any other year, but it was spread across fewer files. I didn't have a fandom that lead to thirty different plot bunnies.

AO3 word count for the year: 10244

Two (of three) ficlets for AELDWS, an attempt at stop-drop-howl that stopped and dropped before the porn, and three yuletide fics. Not my lowest count year - that was 2011, which was a giant pile of work-related stress.

I now have 74 works on AO3, and I think #75 is going to be the scenes from the proto-Smokin' Aces fic that I am still so excited that someone else wrote. *\o/* [personal profile] ponderosa *\o/*

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Literally no one asked for this, but then during the Kings game tonight, their organist played a bit of the Harry Potter theme. And I started to think about a story where Jeff Carter decides that the Canadian version of Hogwarts isn't for him, and Mike Richards is a squib. And then I remembered that I completely lack the patience for writing anything where I have to keep track of an actual system of magic, rather than just giving people unexplained powers, so. Instead, I now have a bit of a story where Mike's a telepath - low level, but that's enough to get him barred from competing in professional sports. (This is probably connected to the Sid/Geno story that I started a couple years ago where there the NHL has a psychic potential cap per team in addition to a salary cap. Someday...)

***

Usually Cartsy's thoughts were about an inch deep. It had made him easy to coach, so far. Mike never had to worry that Carts had a mysterious distraction buried six layers under, not like he sometimes did with Stollsy or Kopi.

It's just that... )

So, that happened. Maybe I can get back to yuletide now.

This past week's AELDWS drabble, which was unsuccessful both in the sense that I'm not satisfied with it, and also that it got me voted off the island.

Also, I would like to say that I hate that summary, and feel in my soul that it should say "that Arthur had been promised" except the had not/had been in a single sentence of summary also felt clumsy. FML.

Title: ask a librarian
Summary: this had not turned out to be the thrilling adventure in library science that Arthur was promised

the story, such as it is )

And now, because it's my blog and I can do what I want, a dvd commentary or whatever of all the things I was trying to do in 350-450 words. Mostly what I failed to do. And a bit of My Thoughts on Yaoi the care and feeding of competitive fic writing.

Too many things, natch. )
healingmirth: typewriter keys (typewriter)
By some miracle, I wrote a thing that survived AELDWS week 1. That's a nice feeling. I so rarely identify with reality show contestants, but like they say, you never want to be the first one sent off.

Unless you hate it and don't want to play anymore, but whatever.

healingmirth: Michael Scott from The Office (US) as Carnac (carnac)
Despite my best efforts, my first swing at [livejournal.com profile] stop_drop_howl stopped and dropped decidedly short of porn when I realized that I didn't actually want to write Derek hooking up with Stiles of Right Now, but I had set the story very much Right Now, argh. Better luck next time.

to shake the devils from my mind (1907 words) by healingmirth
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Teen Wolf (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski
Characters: Derek Hale, Stiles Stilinski
Summary:

"You look tired," Derek says. Stiles smells like pure human exhaustion, like chemical stimulants and sweat. Derek's long past expecting him to be still, but Stiles's fidgets seem muffled, and he's blinking too often and rubbing at his temple with two fingers on his right hand. His left is clenched into a fist, but Derek can't see any reason for it. It makes him want to settle Stiles, to draw the tension out of his body, to hold his hands until they remember how they used to behave.

And now that that's over with, I'm going to finish up the things for Saturday's super sekrit character list meme over yonder, so there's still plenty of time to drop off a scenario.
healingmirth: Coca-Cola bear with Yuletide text (yuletide)
I wrote one fic for Yuletide this year - I think it's the first time I haven't been able to come up with a treat. I had ideas for other things, but they never really came together.

I also totally came out of canon review with a new random ship - Hathaway and Phillip "working class lout from the north of England" Beaumont from The Quality of Mercy (the one with the murder in the student company producing The Merchant of Venice). Because he gets all the best lines, like "The name might not mean much to you now, but give it time: it'll mean even less," and to whom Hathaway asked, "I know it sounds like a silly question, but do you actually like anybody in Oxford?"

It's locked to the archive because Reasons. But apparently I'm willing to admit to having written it in an unlocked post, so. Take from that what you will.

I will spare you most of the blah-de-blah, but I had no idea it was possible for me to spend so much time writing so many words in which so little happens, when I legit thought I was going to write some fluff and move on. Or sixteen thousand words of extraordinarily quiet pining. You know, whichever.
healingmirth: Timothy Olyphant as Raylon Givens from Justified (olyphant)
I have no idea where Justified fandom hangs out. I don't usually have an overwhelming urge to participate, because much of what I want from fandom in general is trope-y or AU or worldbuilding and OCs out of nowhere or general ridiculousness, and Justified is just a really good show, you guys.

All that is to say that pretty much the only time I read Justified fic is when it shows up like magic on my reading page, or this year when I saw a Yuletide letter on, like, the 24th that mentioned Raylan and Tim getting drunk or discovering they having something in common.

So, now that I can say "omg you should go read all the Yuletide Justified fics" without either sekritly self-reccing, or pointedly leaving my own fic out, uh, you should go read them
my story, which I'm pleased with for the jumpy, snippety thing it is, and three others which are all different and all excellent )

New season next week! Why do none of the people I eat lunch with watch this show :(
