As I complained to one of my friends yesterday, all of the wrong people won at sports. I flung myself petulantly onto the couch afterwards, and it didn't help. I don't know how people who are actually from places manage to stick by their teams when they lose year after year.

(I actually just meant that I was disappointed in/for the Penguins and Andy Murray, but it felt more terrible at the time. Also, I was bored and hungry but only had less than an hour before going to have Easter dinner with my mom.)

Luckily, I have accidentally prepared myself for many possible paths through the playoffs. A few weeks ago, I bought some NHL shirts. The reasoning went like this:

- I hate all my long-sleeved t-shirts
- I also hate all the long-sleeved t-shirts that Threadless currently has for sale
- society6?
- wow. what if I just search for cats?
- why is everyone making shirts with giant pictures on them? I look terrible in shirts with designs from hem to hem
- You know what's not productive, self? using google to try to find shirts that only have a banner across the chest, with no restrictions on content
- Ooh, I bet there are sports teams that make stuff like that
- Wow, I hate all the Penguins merch
- Wow, I hate most of everyone else's merch
- Well, the Caps have a banner-ish logo
- And the Habs, I guess
- But if I'm going to be buying things, I really should buy at least one thing for a team where I can match more than one player to his number

Which is why I now have three raglan long-sleeved hockey t-shirts. They're pretty great. And now I am well prepared for jumping on the Canadiens bandwagon through the playoffs.

I haven't written anything in what feels like a year and a half, but what is actually only a little over a month. There was a Perron/Crosby prompt on the meme that has been bouncing around my head, but not any more productively than the multitude of things already bouncing around my writing folders.

I made a pretty great first effort at Spring cleaning last week?

Fic recs!

I'm watching the Penguins game (or, I was until my mom called, so now I'm way behind on the game, and trying to figure out whether I want to watch the third period or switch to Sharks/Kings in a second here) so have some hockey recs. Actually, this is pretty much all my hockey recs, except for stuff that I bookmarked without comment that I now can't remember anything about from the summary and tags. Definitely should have bookmarked more things...

part one - nearly everything that cheeswithmy has written )

some other sid/geno fic )

one Carter/Richards )

it is needlessly confusing for me that there are two J. Benns, so I can't just do Benn/Seguin )

and then Tuukka Rask )
healingmirth: RayK and Fraser, frozen (frozen)
Current favorite things: Alfred's tie pin on Gotham and Justin Williams's everything. If I lived in a market where there was always narratively-edited hockey on my TV, I would never watch anything else.

Current least favorite things: paying my gas and electricity bills today. I was really annoyed when January was nearly over and it had barely snowed, but I'm good now, thanks!

It turns out that I might have been wrong, that stretch of years where I blamed my February debilitating head cold on job-related stress and the collective germs of 100+ teenagers. Like clockwork, again this year, spent the day after Presidents Day exhausted, sniffly, and slightly feverish, despite the fact that I am neither stressed nor living with teenagers. Oh well.

I don't really get the explosion of Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin fic thing, beyond the part where hockey fic about single linemates basically writes itself. I can't remember the last time I watched a Stars game, and I never see any of their press. Lotta fangirls in Texas? Lotta fan girls in Boston who miss Tyler? Who knows.

The fic really does write itself, though, doesn't it?

(I was worried for a second that the fic *had* written itself. Thanks for having some boundaries, Cabbie.)

I am very much behind on all the things. Kitten had an emergency yesterday (he's mostly okay now) that sucked up a good chunk of my time and all of my emotional energy, but let's be real. I've been behind on everything for weeks if not months.

Kings put Mike Richards on waivers

I've been puttering around the house today, doing all the things like laundry and vacuuming that I won't be able to do if the power goes out. A few hours ago I had a fic-thought.

"I've been thinking about retiring," Mike said.

Jeff almost choked on his beer, and turned so that he could give Mike hell for it. ”The fuck you are," he said once he could breathe. As soon as he saw Mike's face though, he knew it wasn't a joke. He wasn't even looking at Jeff for a reaction.

But I thought - like I did a million years ago with a Fall Out Boy future fic idea - nah, I can't write that story. Don't want to jinx anything. It's not even set now! It's set after their contracts expire! Boooooo.

There's other stuff that I've been meaning to post - a few more thoughts about Scorpion, and I finally watched the rest of Lewis, but. Booooooooooooooo. *raspberry*

I don't even care how unreasonable it is to blame the Flyers for those contracts, but I'm going to focus all my grumpiness in that direction.

This week has been a lot. Today looks better? It's starting on a good note, anyway. Slept well, woke up and had home fries and eggs for breakfast, and then the other half of a tiny chocolate cake while watching the Rose Parade.

The kitten has done himself an injury. He fell a couple weeks ago, from a height too low for him to right himself before landing, and he's been limping intermittently and profoundly, but very briefly, since. he's basically okay, but veterinary details behind the cut )

The vet's advice was "try to limit his jumping," and then she said "yeah, I know," and shrugged.

And now I'm getting ready to watch the Winter Classic, about which my only opinion so far is that I like Alex Ovechkin's hair.

I started reading Dezinformatsiya (the spy AU) this morning, and I'm going to go back to it, but I was sort of confused by how abrupt Sid and Geno's first meeting was.

Also on deck, And Never Been Kissed is finished! I read the first four chapters as they were posted, and then fell off last week. But soon!

Free Preview Weekend strikes again, and this time it was almost every episode of Strike Back.

We start with Strike Back Origins, aka Guy of Gisborne abandons several nice young men in precarious circumstances. And also kills lots of dudes who are probably just local law enforcement. And wears a terrible wig. (He's also...Thorin? I haven't seen the new Hobbit movies.)

And then Strike Back seasons 1-3 which were... very Cinemax. less a spoiler and more a sadly predictable reality of action-adventure media )

Unrelated, except that the final game of the Stanley Cup playoffs was a thing that also happened at the weekend:

Gotta love when the third google image result for "Jeff Carter" is a gif of Mike Richards. But wow, Jeff Carter's current tooth situation is rough. On the one hand, it's nice that he is apparently not bothered. On the other hand, put your bridge in, please. Yikes.

Also, I'm still (5? days later) a little mad at NBCSN for launching straight into interviewing Mike Richards at the top of their coverage instead of filling for a minute until I switched over. Bah.

I had this fic idea that I'd been poking at, but it sort of depended on the Kings bombing out of the playoffs, which obvs. didn't happen, and now I'm not sure if I want to rework the premise, or set it during a different season, since it is so, so very detached from reality anyway. It's always amusing to be able to tell when your fandom Does a Thing because of the shift in kudos e-mails, and I really want to write some more. Maybe a h-c bingo story.

Speaking of which, I should have said earlier. If there's a fandom that you know I have at least a fair familiarity with, and you want to make a suggestion for a character combination and a square from my h-c bingo card, please do.

Also rewatched parts of The History Boys (was that really only set in 1983? Good job my brain on combining it with Dead Poet's Society, I guess) and all of Pacific Rim, and I had 1) totally forgotten the whole scientist plot, and 2) forgotten how terrible the dialogue is. Terrible. So bad. Terribad. So much narration!

Has there ever been a more "As you know, Bob..." -tastic major motion picture? I don't think so. And yet the images are so pretty!

I finally went to go see Captain America: The Winter Soldier yesterday, after delaying for no good reason except for a lot of bargaining with myself about things I was supposed to accomplish. Bookending the trip to the movies, I also caught up on, like, eight episodes of Agents of SHIELD. This was just in time, it appears, for next week's finale, so yay?

By some miracle, I was unspoiled for both, so: thank you, fandom!

Remains to be seen whether I will be Reading All the post-movie Things. I've got a couple of rec lists bookmarked, but I think MCU, like Teen Wolf, is just too big for me to bother trying to keep up with.

I have roughly the same problems with, or rather, the same lack of interest in, Agent Ward as I do with all of the dudes who are not played by James Spader on The Blacklist. (I have finally learned the last name, at least, of both Agent White Dudes. So that's progress.) It's not complicated. I just don't care. The connection here is simple. I have already heard these dudes' stories about a hundred times. The fact that they're presented with absolutely no nuance is not helping.

brief nattering about Agents of SHIELD, and more specifically, Coulson. Spoilers Ahoy. )

I'm super excited that Hannibal will be back, and I hope that the people creating it continue to be excited about it, and continue to be awesome. I can't remember the last TV show that I watched as it aired, and part of that joy is catching up on the tweets from Bryan Fuller and Aaron Abrams at the commercial breaks.

Other than that, mostly watching a lot of playoff hockey. I know there was a point when I was watching Blackhawk games and caring who won, but I'm over it, even though I think I can still name most of the roster. (Nothing against y'all Chicago fen, go cheer your hearts out, but now that they've won the cup again, something in me just can't get excited about the possibility of a repeat.)

I'm now pulling for a Penguins/Kings Stanley Cup Final, no matter how improbable, with a Penguins/Canadiens ECF. I wouldn't be mad at the Habs making it to the final. Anything else, though (Ducks? Wild? Bruins?) I couldn't be less excited about. Rangers would be cool, but I just can't believe that's ever going to happen.

It's playoff season, and everyone I know around here who follows hockey is... a big jerk. It's just the truth. I miss when [livejournal.com profile] ontd_pucking was still a thing. Do I need to be on twitter to do something other than yell NOOOOO at my cat when Fleury moves out of his crease to try and handle the puck?

fancake banner for cupcake round 41-b marriage of convenience: thematic multi-fandom recs

There are a few days left in the current "cupcake" round at [community profile] fancake and I am so in love. I need to go through my bookmarks (why am I so avoidant about tagging on pinbiard, whyyyyyy) to see what I can contribute, because seriously. High stakes avoidance and miscommunication. Turned up to eleven. Sometimes with a side of friends-to-lovers. So good.

Uh... what else. Hannibal is So Good. Has everyone else told you that Hannibal is So Good? Probably. I not even the tiniest bit interested in fan works other than meta yet, but I feel like it's approaching. I spent most of last night's episode So Angry at a number of characters, but in the good way, where it was because I cared and I can't wait to see how things resolve.

For whatever reason (societal habituation to violence, how ya doin'?), there's only been one episode of Hannibal that even remotely freaked me out, but I read the descriptions - not even particularly specific ones - of some creepypasta thingers, and I had such a nightmare after, omg.

I have so much fic queued up to read, but so little attention for it. A Saturday or two ago, I suddenly realized that I was partway through three entirely different fics, all of which I cared about, because I kept taking a break to do chores and forgetting.

Oh hey there Kris Letang. Hey there, Kris Letang's hair. So glad he's back playing, for the obvious reasons, but also the shallow ones.
