healingmirth: Glitch from Tin Man: "o.O" (Glitch)
I feel like I haven't watched any scripted television in a million years. I've managed to watch the evening news every day, and SYTYCD each week and American Ninja Warrior and... I think that's it. Things just keep piling up on my DVR. I haven't even started this season of Teen Wolf yet.

I understand now that it's a thing in-universe for Haven, but I can't be the only one who sees the promos for the Haven TroublesFest whose brain goes straight to Northern Ireland and thence to 'nooooope'.

This is like when [community profile] imadeathing would only parse in my head as "I'm a deathing" as opposed to the actual "I made a thing"

Walked FOREVER in Manhattan yesterday, including a wander through SoHo and a moment before that when I was looking at where google maps wanted me to turn left and thinking... "Canal street. Why do I know Canal Street?" Because Chinatown, that's why. This is why I'm the worst tour guide.

AELDWS Week Two Drabbles are up, if you're looking for some Arthur/Eames high school/college AU ficlets.

I had a moment this morning of thinking it would be fun to try to guess which of the remaining writers wrote which drabble, because I am terrible at that, and it wouldn't kill me to pay a little attention to detail, but... summer brain, so maybe not.

The voting for week one of the Arthur Eames Last Drabble Writer Standing is open. 19 ficlets (or drabbles if you're not picky about terminology) but math informs me that it's under 6000 words total. The vote is via google form because like 2/3 of the participants live on tumblr now. *shakes fist* TUMBLR!

Anyway, I was looking back at my challenge tag, and realized that I first posted that character list meme six months ago today. I'm pretty sure it's counterproductive to my actually completing a story, but it was fun, and I like doing fun things!

Character List Meme

1) Make a list of fifteen characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment.

2) Ask your f-list to post questions in the comments. For example: "One, nine, and fifteen are chosen by a prophecy to save the world from four. Do they succeed?", "Under what circumstances might five and fourteen fall in love?", "Which character on the list would you most want on your side in a zombie invasion?"

3) After your f-list has stopped asking questions, round them up and answer them using the fifteen characters you selected beforehand, then post them.

I'm going to leave this open at least through the weekend. Please ask me something :) Or several somethings!

I complain fairly often that I can't write short things, but I signed up for the Arthur/Eames Last Drabble Writer Standing over at [livejournal.com profile] inceptiversary and there's been something really satisfying about writing below a word count on this first prompt. It's like a puzzle! This is particularly true since I am generally so, so lazy with my prose. Like, there's an excellent chance that I'm not improving the sentences by continuing to fiddle with them, but it's been a nice and relatively finite distraction from, y'know, everything that's wrong with everything lately.

Speaking of losing faith in humanity: in conversation with my mother recently, it came out that her conversations with my dad now completely avoid politics and the economy because he thinks Obama is the worst thing to ever happen to the country. And also that he doesn't understand why we didn't just build a giant wall on the border. Giant. Wall. Ugh.

The Obama thing wasn't a huge surprise, but, yeah. For anyone who wonders why I never have anything to say to my father on the phone, there's a start that I can point to.

Back in shallower news, I guess the new(ish) "feed" version of the LJ friends page doesn't display the text of cut tags, just an arrow you can click on to expand the body of the entry. So, I'm never going to that page again. It's nice when decisions are simple.

Free Preview Weekend strikes again, and this time it was almost every episode of Strike Back.

We start with Strike Back Origins, aka Guy of Gisborne abandons several nice young men in precarious circumstances. And also kills lots of dudes who are probably just local law enforcement. And wears a terrible wig. (He's also...Thorin? I haven't seen the new Hobbit movies.)

And then Strike Back seasons 1-3 which were... very Cinemax. less a spoiler and more a sadly predictable reality of action-adventure media )

Unrelated, except that the final game of the Stanley Cup playoffs was a thing that also happened at the weekend:

Gotta love when the third google image result for "Jeff Carter" is a gif of Mike Richards. But wow, Jeff Carter's current tooth situation is rough. On the one hand, it's nice that he is apparently not bothered. On the other hand, put your bridge in, please. Yikes.

Also, I'm still (5? days later) a little mad at NBCSN for launching straight into interviewing Mike Richards at the top of their coverage instead of filling for a minute until I switched over. Bah.

I had this fic idea that I'd been poking at, but it sort of depended on the Kings bombing out of the playoffs, which obvs. didn't happen, and now I'm not sure if I want to rework the premise, or set it during a different season, since it is so, so very detached from reality anyway. It's always amusing to be able to tell when your fandom Does a Thing because of the shift in kudos e-mails, and I really want to write some more. Maybe a h-c bingo story.

Speaking of which, I should have said earlier. If there's a fandom that you know I have at least a fair familiarity with, and you want to make a suggestion for a character combination and a square from my h-c bingo card, please do.

Also rewatched parts of The History Boys (was that really only set in 1983? Good job my brain on combining it with Dead Poet's Society, I guess) and all of Pacific Rim, and I had 1) totally forgotten the whole scientist plot, and 2) forgotten how terrible the dialogue is. Terrible. So bad. Terribad. So much narration!

Has there ever been a more "As you know, Bob..." -tastic major motion picture? I don't think so. And yet the images are so pretty!

Today I purchased a cheapish bottle of Pinot Noir, and one of Zinfandel, and two different bottles of Champagne (or more accurately, one bottle of Champagne and one of sparkling wine). Also, a new dutch oven, and more ground beef so that I can actually make the chili I planned to make last week, and some cider doughnut holes that I'm going to try to make last more than a day.

This may because it is raining today, and cold to boot.
More mild challenge WTFery.

There's a new Inception fic challenge community, and its rules (somewhat lacking in... specificity) are in the profile. Rule #9 is my favorite: Please don't feel sad if you don't win. That doesn't mean you aren't a talented writer by any means.

Don't feel sad! It's a rule!

I'm totally going to write gen fic. I'm going to write Gen fic about Yusu(e)f. For some reason I can only write gen fic for challenges, and for challenges I can only write gen fic.
Billy Joe Armstrong is playing St. Jimmy this week in American Idiot. I am a tiny* bit frightened to see his performance, and I am a slightly larger bit frightened of the audience members who may show up, but I have to at least check it out.
Having survived my Weekend of Too Much Top Gear, I have discovered a new favorite Star in a Reasonably Priced Car interview: Will Young from Pop Idol. He and Jeremy talk about home decorating. At length.
Anyone who gets SyFy and stopped watching Stargate: Universe halfway through season one, you can pick up where you left off with a marathon tomorrow, leading up to the season two premiere.
And Undercovers. I liked it, in a non-threatening way, but this gets spoilery )

le sigh

Something about this Android browser hates the text box on the dreamwidth update page. Blargh. Hello, mobile site!

So this was me, 20 minutes into tonight's SYTYCD results show: Read more... )

So there's this community on lj called [livejournal.com profile] multi_ficathon that does a 24-hour writing period, and I'm going to give it a shot this weekend. If you're in the mood to prompt me something, pick a prompt word and a character or pairing, and I'll write you something on Saturday.

Any character (no RPF, sorry) from anything I've written or watched is on the table, any pairing, or if you're feeling brave, give me a seed for an original character or two.

the list! )
