Disney to Buy Marvel and its 5,000 Characters for $4 Billion

Disney sees an opportunity to plug Marvel into its vaunted marketing and distribution system.

Almost immediately, for instance, Marvel characters will pop up at Disney’s theme parks in Paris and Hong Kong. Disney’s cable television channels will showcase Marvel, while consumer products could be an enormous area of growth, particularly overseas where the comics company has struggled to make inroads.

I haven't been to a Disney theme park in years, but it would freak me the hell out to have superheros or -villains wandering around the Magic Kingdom. Disneyfied, or not.

(Actually, I am far too lazy to go look this up, but does Six Flags have some sort of formal partnership with DC? I don't remember whether they have any costumed peoples, but they've got Batman and Superman roller coasters. But those are just rides, not potential creative input into a (movie?) title.)

Unrelated, but also interesting (to me) Europe’s Ban on Old-Style [incandescent] Light Bulbs Begins

At a briefing Monday in Brussels, however, they also were defending themselves against charges that they were depriving children of traditional fairground lights, and dealing with more serious questions about health hazards from the mercury in the new lamps.

Such arguments have already started to reverberate in the United States, where incandescent bulbs are due to be phased out starting in 2012.
