So, that's awkward
Oct. 8th, 2009 12:14 pmOne of my best friends is getting married this weekend, and in lieu of a bachelorette party, a bunch of us went over to her apartment to hang out and watch movies and put together wedding favors and whatnot last night.
Possibly unnecessary context: I went to the type of high school where "everyone" goes to college (where "everyone" does not include the kids that the high school shunts into night classes and alternate education models that don't appear in the school's graduation and matriculation statistics). These kids go to college, mostly out of state, and then end up living far, far away. For some reason, my group of friends didn't. Four of the five who went to college ended up back in the county where we went to high school, and the two who didn't go to college never left the area, and are now living back in the town where we went to high school. I've been gone for 10 years.
On what is probably a mostly unrelated note to the circumstances of our schooling, they are all fans of the Twilight books and the movies, to the point of having gotten into a heated debate of the casting of several characters last night. (They also watch all the "Real Housewives of..." series.)
I'm assuming that they watch the same shows and read the same books mostly because they hang out all the time, and friendship like that is sort of chicken-or-egg-ish in terms of interests. Also, I'm totally willing to admit that my disdain for and disinterest in Twilight is totally influenced by my own involvement in LJ fandom, and definitely colored by some Twilight fandom WTFery that I've run across, neither of which have anything to do with my RL friends. I don't know the first thing about the actual books. Still, it was an extra serving of awkward on top of my existing not-fitting-in that they had this whole conversation that I couldn't participate in.
I have a concept of friendship that is fundamentally different than what they have, because I can't remember the last time I had a single group of people that I spent all my time with. It was probably high school, with these girls. I tend to have a handful of friends at any given time who either don't know each other or actively dislike each other. The people who I spend the most time talking to are usually not in the same town as I am, or the same town as each other.
Dunno, it's just weird. I think I might have liked it better when I lived far away from them, too.
Also! SYTYCD Vegas week starts! I did a really poor job of staying away from spoilers for this season, so I wasn't surprised by anyone who went home, but I also wasn't shocked by any of the cuts on their own merits. I'm wondering if anything is going to match the WTFery of them cutting Natalie (Katee's roommate) during contemporary last season. I am really excited for this season, and I am really tired of Tyce.
