I'm sure there was a reason that I was thinking about engagement rings this morning, but I can't remember what it was. Eventually, the thinking meandered around to the fact that, should I ever be engaged to get married, I'm ambivalent about engagement rings. I was wondering whether I'd be setting myself up for social stigma, or my fiancé up to be regarded as a cheap bastard, cause I am not all that psyched about rings, particularly rings with gems on them that I have to worry about.

Somehow, that led to the idea of men's engagement rings, and whether there's a market for them, either for gay or hetero couples. Which led, as all things do, to google, and this quote at the top of the first page I clicked on.

Naturally, men's engagement rings do not have a high diamond setting with prongs and other highlighted features. Subtle, understated rings are more practical for work, sport, and maintenance activities.

To which my immediate response was - of course, because women don't work, or play sports, or maintain anything...

And yes, rationally, given prevailing mores and gender roles, that is a sensible statement, particularly for some questionably designed website for jewelry information. It still made me grumpy though.
