I really enjoyed the audition shows this season, and they introduced a fair number of people that I found highly watchable, but who didn't make it to the top 24 or to the live show list, so it pains me to say this: Let me tell you how much I am prepared to not like this season of SYTYCD.

I was prepared to forgive them the stage, which I hate (along with everyone else) because of the light-up backdrop thinger, which I like. From Cat's five seconds on the Hollywood stage, that appears unchanged.

I'm prepared to forgive them the new format, even though I was nervous that they would continue to pick a few duds. I'm prepared to forgive them the selection of those all-stars; I only really object to Ade, because I seriously hatedhatedhated his feet and his one-trick solo during season 5, but I'll grant that he's got potential to be a great partner.

I'm not sure if I'm going to forgive them their selection for the top ten eleven. I don't know how many times Nigel has talked about "what this show is all about" with their growth as dancers and whatnot, and how it's not "America's best dancer" it's "America's favorite dancer" but I look at that list, and there are only four - Lauren, Melinda, Kent and Jose - that made any sort of impression on me with their performance or their personality.

And speaking of the list -

Adechike - contemporary
Alex - ballet
Alexia - jazz/contemporary
Ashley - lyrical
Billy - contemporary
Christina - salsa/bellydancing
Jose - b-boy
Kent - contemporary jazz
Lauren - jazz
Melinda - tap
Robert - contemporary

I don't have the faintest idea what differentiates contemporary from lyrical from jazz, and I will grant that Alex Wong really is his own class, but excuse me for thinking that when Nigel said that they can't just fill the top ten with contemporary dancers, that he might have meant a little more diversity than that. Did they even feature a single male ballroom dancer in the audition shows this season? I mean, obviously they have to work with who shows up, but this feels like it's going to be a fundamentally different season in so many ways, and with every episode I'm less excited.

Sigh.
