For reference, in the season 3 premiere Winona cared, Art gave Raylan some shit about requalifying after he was shot, Raylan and Boyd were on contentious but on amusing speaking terms, ("Well now, if I found that kind of money I'd be in Mexico by now." "Boyd, I've been to Mexico I don't think you'd like it." "How so?" "There's a lot of Mexicans") and then got into a fight. We set up Quarels and Wynn Duffy, and scenes of marshals being marshals, and Ava and Arlo and Devil.
By the end of the season 4 premiere, I just felt... disappointed. It was a little like watching an episode of Law and Order. Maybe SVU.
So let's see, in this season's premiere, we kicked off with a flashback to completely random people, gratuitous nudity, yet another hot chick (not that I don't like Lindsey, but she doesn't seem to be going anywhere), Raylan lying (or at least omitting) about some questionably legal activities to Rachel in an otherwise empty office, locking the questionably-acquired fugitive in the trunk and then losing him, and a "mystery" that I'm pretty sure we're only supposed to care about because Arlo killed a guy, presumably to keep him silent.
On rewatching, I remember that I did really enjoy the appearance of Constable Bob, and that I do always enjoy Boyd and Ava, but that memory was soured when his MP buddy suddenly went dark-side. The tent preacher and his wife and/or sister, once we finally got to meet them, were oddly uncompelling.
Uh, I liked the part where Raylan shot the airbag to stun the guy.
I can only hope (and presume) that the church half and the drug half are going to connect eventually, but neither half made me want to tune in to the next episode. :(
Maybe they just killed off too many people last season. I'm going to give it time, clearly.
