If you'd asked me last week, yes or no, whether I knew The Three Musketeers, I would probably have said yes. I'm finally watching The Musketeers this week, and nope! Never mind the fact that it took me like five minutes to come up with Aramis's name, minutes filled with me repeating "Athos, Porthos, and..." in my head, over and over again. Like, not a single thing has hit me with an oh-yeah or uh-no moment, neither plot nor characterization.

I tried watching the first episode a couple weeks ago, and it just wasn't working for me, but now I'm really enjoying it, and will probably finish the series this weekend. Is the fandom going to make me angry? The most kudos'd complete fic is Athos/OFC...

(We've watched only 2 eps, because a Certain Person in our house can't seem to find the time to sit down and watch with us ... and yet wants us to hold off until he catches up.)

If I had to coordinate my tv-watching with someone else these days, I don't know that I'd ever watch anything. We did that with Stargate forever ago. So. Many. Episodes. You have my sympathies :)

Ha! Actually I long ago gave up the hope that someone would ever write what I want to read (see Some Day My Fic Will Come): now most of my fannish time is spent in places where I don't have to spend all my time avoiding things that make me go "Ugh, seriously?!"

I think my stop is coming up soon. *g*

So, I know we were talking about this a million years ago, but I finally have an answer of sorts about the editing of episodes of The Musketeers on BBC America.

I just watched the US version (run time 1 hour 3 minutes) of episode 3 "Commodities" and it's missing at least two entire scenes - one bit of villainous scheming and one sex scene; one section was spliced together from two other pieces that hung together thematically but not chronologically; and there's at least one fight scene that's missing a minute or so scattered throughout, but it didn't feel like it was missing anything substantial. I haven't rewatched episode 4, but it's missing the same number of minutes.

From episode 5 through the season finale, the running time on my DVR is back up to 1:18, so it seems they didn't edit those.

Interesting ... when you say you watched the US version of ep3, was that from the broadcast or the R1 DVD?

(We were able to prod Large Grumpy Monster into watching eps 3 and 4, and the It Was Pronounced Good, meaning we might think about getting DVDs, but now I'm curious about this editing business.)

This was off the BBC America broadcast. I thought I'd recorded the first two, but I don't have them, and I wasn't paying attention to run times as it was airing, so I'm a little confused as to why they'd trim some of them but not all, when airing them in the same time slot.

Er, actually, I seem to have recorded episode 4 on a Wednesday, and the rest on Sunday or Monday, so it may be possible that they aired different versions of the episodes at different times? I don't know anymore.

BBCA does tend to repeat episodes several times in the week following intial broadcast (which was on Sunday evenings here.)

It's possible that they edited later episodes a bit in order to carve out additional commercial space once the series began to receive positive critical buzz here in the US (which it did: we hadn't heard of the show but watched solely based on a single enthusiastic review) ... but I don't know. I'm going to assume that the DVDs are unedited.

I think Mary has reined it in a bit, or at least she's irritating me far less this season. Nigel is making up for it :(

But in general... Yup. I had at least a couple seasons where I was only hanging on by fast-forwarding through the "judging".
