Remember last season, when you decided to make everything fancy, and... )

In other news, I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo. I am totally going to write bad-guy bit-part backstory for the Die Hard series. Every couple months, someone asks for Matt/Gabriel, and I can never see my way to it, but I think it would be interesting to try.

I finished Sons of Anarchy season 1. I was thinking of writing up a hypothetical review of the series, and what warnings I'd attach to it, and came to the conclusion that it might be a shorter list if I brainstormed the things that I wouldn't have to warn for. There's a lot of bad, bad people, but it makes for compelling TV. As opposed to Defying Gravity which is over now, thank goodness.

Things that are awesome:

Sons of Anarchy, Season 1

I watched the first episode or two and thought, "Oh, so it's like Hamlet." And then I went and looked at the wikipedia article and yeah, it's Hamlet. Except with motorcycles and methheads. I haven't read anything about season two yet, because I don't want to spoil the end of the first season. It's compelling tv, and I hope the second season keeps it up.

SYTYCD

I tried not to get too attached to anyone from Vegas week, because that never ends well. I don't trust their editors. I am, however, very excited for this season.

Also? Mia Michaels announced her... resignation? from the show. I'm not sure what sort of contract the choreographers and judges have, but whatever her involvement has been in the past, it's over. I am highly curious, what with her warm-fuzzy-huggy choreography session in Vegas week whether she's had some sort of Life Changing Epiphany or something. Also, she tweets in all caps. I hate that. ETA Also? she's got shaved-short hair and... lots of nice things to say, as of last week's SYTYCD Canada. I am so, so confused. I, uh, hope she's just her normal level of crazy?

Things that are not as much fun as they used to be:

Project Runway

I hate Nicholas like I hated Kenley, but at least Kenley was clearly being set up as a villain. I feel bad for hating Nicholas, because he's just a big geek. Remember that first challenge when he made the "punk" outfit which was so, so, so not? Based on all that time he spent hanging out with the punk kids? (or following them like a lost puppy?) He's not nearly as catty as Kenley was given their similar "I moved to the city when I was (whatever-)teen" blah blah blah stories, and he doesn't seem to have the giant chip on his shoulder either, but I want him gone, gone, gone. I am literally frightened of the collection he'd produce.

However, once he's gone, I think everyone left in the competition is going to make nice, quiet, wearable clothing, which... yawn.

Stuff in space

SGU - Did anything happen this week? Seriously. We learned some names, and Rush continued to be unhinged. Yawn.

Defying Gravity has one episode left in the first (and presumably only) season, and I'm sort of glad they didn't broadcast the rest of them in the US. Such a trainwreck. Makes me sad, because I would watch the hell out of that show if they had dialed back the melodrama by about 2/3.

And for no reason whatsoever:

Cobra Starship (half of them, anyway) being interviewed before Los Premios MTV. There is lots of Spanish, but mostly I love that Ryland has no fucking clue what's going on, and then in the middle of the interview he says "Bailamos. Let the rhythm take you over, bailamos. If I could have something on my gravestone, that's what it would be," when they're talking about how people don't sing live because they can't dance and sing at the same time. Also? Ryland is awesome.

I don't have standards for TV shows that require them to be subtle. I don't really pay attention to what I watch closely enough to pick up details, because I am totally distracted by shiny things. I also have several years' history of playing computer games with the TV on which have ruined my ability to actually sit still and pay attention to TV. This is why I totally fail at watching things like Fringe and Lost.

I have maybe not been paying attention, but mild spoilers for Defying Gravity episode 10 )

Oddly, this is sort of the same problem I have with Glee. I watch the episodes, with my typical lack of attention-paying, and then spend the rest of the night trying to decide whether I'm over- or under-thinking it, because I am totally not reading some things as satire that I think ought to be, but I can't be bothered to really watch the show.

But mostly my problem with Glee is (still) how much shorter Lea is than Cory. So, so distracting, and it's even worse when she's clearly standing on something so that they can have a close-up shot.

In high school, I would have said that I was an auditory learner, because I rarely did my homework, and did not read the textbook if I could get away with it, and I did fine. I am reasonably sure that's not true, now. I think the true thing was that high school was just not very hard.

I don't remember probably well over 50% of what I discuss with people, either because I don't listen or because I am capable of holding information in my brain for precisely long enough to use it in conversation, and then once the conversation is over, it's gone. I am apparently expert at making understanding sounds while not actually paying attention, which would be awesome if I was doing it on purpose, but most of the time I don't even notice that I've done it until after the conversation's over.

I watched the first four episodes of Defying Gravity today on hulu.com. (the first two episodes expire three days from now, if you want to check them out before you have to find another means to do so) I've had to watch most of the scenes with Donner's voice-over at least twice, because halfway through I realize that I have no idea what he's just said. And then, after I replay it and actually listen to him, I sort of wonder whether it's really necessary. Reminds me of the Wonder Years.

Other than that, I'm really enjoying the show. Engaging characters, interesting relationships, intriguing snippets of the future and the mystery. Two thumbs up, and I'm sort of reluctant to leave the remaining already-aired episodes to go play volleyball tonight.

Of course, I'm also reluctant to go play volleyball for a bunch of other reasons, but Defying Gravity is in there. Also, having to watch Project Runway at 11:30 instead of 10. And the fact that I forgot how to set in the month and a half that I took off for my sprained thumb.
